On September 19, 1937, Scotts Bluff National Monument dedicated the Summit Road, a 1.6-mile-long concrete road built primarily by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). On September 19, 2007, Scotts Bluff rededicated this road with 35 pre-1938 model automobiles lined up to make the âfirstâ trip up the road. Podium participants wore historic clothing, including William Henry Jackson, the CCC superintendent and the NPS custodian. The 48-star flag was flown during the event.
At the reception following, three community members who were part of the CCC-era construction were honored with plaques. Each were in their 90s and were the hit of the afternoonâs event. Senator Ben Nelson sent a statement from the Congressional Record (entered September 19, 2007) âIn Commemoration of Summit Road 70th Anniversary.â Congressman Adrian Smith sent a letter of congratulations. The local newspaper heralded the event as âlike taking a step back in time...â
