NPS DIRECTOR VISITS CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL NHS

Central High School National Historic Site

National Park News

Director Fran Mainella met with staff and toured Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site on Monday. The Director was accompanied by Associate Director for Partnerships, Interpretation and Education, Volunteers, and Outdoor Recreation, Christopher Jarvi, Midwest Regional Director, Ernie Quintana, and Hot Springs National Park Superintendent Josie Fernandez. The Director was in Little Rock to deliver a speech at the annual Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL) meeting.

Director Mainella met Central High School Principal Nancy Rousseau and students and faculty of the high school. Principal Rousseau introduced the Director and asked the students, ?What?s the only functioning high school to be included in the boundary of a National Park Service site?? The students responded in unison saying, ?Central High School.?

After leaving CHSC, the Director attended a reception in her honor and met with Congressman Vic Snyder, Little Rock Mayor Jim Dailey, staff for the offices of Senators Lincoln and Pryor and other key supporters of the site. Director Mainella also met one of the Little Rock Nine, Minnijean Brown Trickey, who gave a keynote address at the APPL Conference earlier that morning. In the afternoon Mainella and Jarvi participated in a panel discussion titled ?Updates From the National Park Service? at the conference.

CHSC Park Ranger Tarona Armstrong Bennett said of the Director?s visit, ?it was a great opportunity for new NPS employees to meet the Director and hear her philosophies on how to preserve the legacy of the National Park Service.?
