2008-05-01Washington MonumentForget about going up it unless you reserve months in advance.
2007-12-14Big Bend National ParkAwesome park! Avoid spring break and Christmas break though.
2005-06-25Agate Fossil Beds National MonumentTotally out in the middle of nowhere, but it's pretty interesting. Lots of fossils and a modern day homestead. Take the ranger hike up to the buttes.
2005-06-25Fort Laramie National Historic SiteHuge fort. There was a lot going on - many people were walking around in costume and acting out characters.
2005-06-24Scotts Bluff National MonumentPretty scenic landscape. Some interesting cultural artifacts (like Conestoga wagons) at the visitor center. Great views from atop the bluff.
2005-06-16Bent's Old Fort National Historic SitePretty cool little fort. The tour is great - the guide re-enacted various jobs.
2005-06-15Great Sand Dunes National Park and PreserveThe dunes are dramatic, as can be the weather. The climb up to the top takes longer, and is more strenuous, than expected.
2005-06-04Capitol Reef National ParkLot more to see and do than expected - many hikes available. The main canyon has some impressive views, but only from the valley floor (from cars). The drive out toward Glen Canyon is long and traverses primitive land. The orchards, farm houses, a...
2005-06-04Glen Canyon National Recreation AreaHuge. Camping at Halls Camping overlooking Lake Powell was great. The ferry ride across is cool. Bull Frog is overrun with boats. Hite is a remote and desolate place - the lake has receeded far out. But the drive to the northwest of Hite is very s...
2005-06-03Natural Bridges National MonumentPretty cool smaller park. The trips down to the bridges and back up are real workouts!
2005-06-02Canyonlands National ParkHuge park - took two days exploring, and didn't even get to the Maze District or Horseshoe Canyon. Camping just outside of the Needles District was great!
2005-06-01Arches National ParkSpent two days checking out Arches. The second day was sooo hot. The Primitive Trail in the Devils Garden is a killer.
2004-07-04Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National ParkLong, steep, gray. Cool rock patterns in the walls. Dangling your feet over the sheer, unprotected edge thousands of feet deep induces vertigo! The hike out the the western end is okay. The drive down to the bottom is cool, but steep and long - be...
2004-07-04Curecanti National Recreation AreaLong lake.
2004-07-03Colorado National MonumentH-O-T! Cool views.
2004-06-13Rocky Mountain National ParkTourons are annoying.
2004-06-03Lassen Volcanic National ParkAlright. Scenic alpine mountains. Lots of snow. Not much volcanic stuff to look at - most probably buried under snow. Except the Sulfer area. Pretty cool, and smelly.
2004-06-03Lava Beds National MonumentWild. Crazy. Two aspects - lava formations and the history related to the Captain Jack battle. Bunch of lava tubes - totally open - descend the steps and get lost!
2004-06-02Crater Lake National ParkSurreal. The crater is huge, with very steep sides. Only a small part of the ring road was open, on the south by the lodge and the visitor center; still many, many feet of snow. The sides are steep, treacherous, snow-covered slides! The lodge has ...
2004-06-01Muir Woods National MonumentCool
2004-06-01Point Reyes National SeashoreRemote, windy, fault, surreal.
2004-06-01Golden Gate National Recreation AreaLots to see.
2004-03-12Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield ParkCivil war...
2004-03-04Everglades National ParkPretty cool...
2004-03-04Canaveral National SeashoreNice. Armadillos!
